It is expected to produce high-quality planting material of recommended clones when distributing plants for the re/new planting. Therefore the department undertakes the responsibility of supplying the same by establishing and maintaining 8 nurseries.

The plants produced in these nurseries are distributed twice a year with the onset of the monsoon. May/ June & Oct./Nov. Kegalle, Kalutara, Ratnapura, Gampaha, Colombo, Kandy, Kurunegala, Matale, Galle, Matara districts and Sep./Dec. Monaragala, Badulla, Ampara, Hambantota districts.

The following Nurseries are conducted under the Rubber Development Department

Since this nursery was expanded to an extent of 128 acres in the Divisional Secretary’s Division of Bulathsinhala in Kalutara District by the Rubber Control Department in the year 1953. This nursery is managed by the Kalutara Regional Office of the Rubber Development Department. Egaloya Nursery was renowned as the largest Bud wood rubber nursery then in Asia. Only 43 acres remain at present.

This nursery was established by the Rubber Control Department in the year 1989 in the Divisional Secretary’s Division of Horana in Kalutara District under the second phase of the World Bank Project. It is managed by the Kalutara Regional Office of the Rubber Development Department. Since it was vested in the Industrial Zone of Horana, it had been closed for a short period of time and the production of plants was re-commenced in year 2003. This nursery has a land in extend of 50 acres and it is the second largest nursery. As per the location of this nursery and the proximity to the highways, it can be introduced as a nursery with a high potential to transport plants to any area of the country.

This Nursery which was established in the year 1986 by the Rubber Control Department in the Divisional Secretary’s Division of Attanagalla in Gampaha District under the World Bank Project for Rehabilitation of Rubber Small Holdings can be introduced as the pioneer for the production of qualitative immature bud wood rubber. This is managed under the Kegalle Regional Office of the Rubber Development Department. The extent of land of this nursery is 42 acres and it has been able to maintain as a fully-fledged nursery.

This Nursery was established in the year 1990 by the Rubber Control Department in the Divisional Secretary’s Division of Attanagalla in Gampaha District under the second phase of the World Bank Project. Now it is managed by the Kegalle Regional Office of the Rubber Development Department. It can also be introduced as the sole nursery situated in close proximity to a suburb's main road. The extent of land of this nursery is 26 acres.

This Nursery which was established in the year 2004 in the Divisional Secretary’s Division of Monaragala in Monaragala District owns the largest extent of land and its dimension is 50 acres. This is managed under the Monaragala Regional Office of the Rubber Development Department.This nursery has been established with a view to expanding rubber cultivation in the areas where traditional rubber cultivation is not available.

This Nursery was established in the year 2006 in the Divisional Secretary’s Division of Middeniya in Hambantota District. Now it is managed under the Galle Regional office of the Rubber Development Department. The nursery which consists of 25 acres was established with a view to expand the rubber cultivation in the areas surrounding Hambantota where traditional rubber cultivation is not available.

This nursery was established in year 1985, in the Divisional Secretary’s Division of Kuruwita in Rathnapura District by the Rubber Control Department. Now it is exapnded to an extent of 32 acres.This is managed under the Ratnapura Regional Office of Rubber Development Department. This is the first nursery built under the World Bank Project for the rehabilitation of Small Rubber Lands. Due to the difficulty of finding a land with all the requirements suitable for a nursery, this land had to be chosen. As there is no permanent source of water, water is supplied from the small reservoir that has been prepared. Arrangements have been made to mix compost and such substitutes into the soil to improve the condition of the soil.

This nursery was established in year 2017, in the Divisional Secretary’s Division of Padiyathalawain Ampara District by the Rubber Development Department. This Nursery has been established with the aim of popularizing rubber cultivation in areas where traditional rubber cultivation does not exist. This is managed under the Monaragala Regional Office. It has extent of 50 acres.
